Worked my way through both undergrad and grad school. Graduated debt free in 1982. When it was time, sent my daughters to college. I paid it all. Thankful for the privilege. Today, they are mid-30's, successful, married, children, homeowners, etc. They started life out several steps above where I started. My grandchildren will most likely start out above their parents. Excellent. Have no animosity toward anyone at all who takes advantage of current regulations to get a portion of their student loans eliminated. Vast majority will more than pay this modest cost back by increased income on which they will pay increased taxes, etc. It is no different than giving a company a free ride on taxes to attract investment to a community/state. Never will make everyone happy as to where such tax policy results in the actual location of a company, etc. Community that benefits will of course be pleased. Understandable those not directly benefited will not be happy. Can't please everyone. Have to make the decision that will best benefit the most people. My nephew is Dean of Science at a major university. And he was telling me that his city gave tax breaks to a company to locate there -- and when the tax breaks went away, the company moved.
"Lemee get this straight. You're a scientist, right? You had a hypothesis that tax breaks would lure a company. You tried in and it worked. Then to check your experiments, you took away the tax breaks and the company left. Have I got that right?"Comment

Yes, exactly right. It is amazing how many so called smart people do not have a clue that corporations have never paid a penny in taxes. Their owners (stock holders) have never paid taxes levied against the corps they own. The people paying the taxes are the customers that buy whatever the corporation sells. And who is that? Re: tax breaks for corporations. Guess it all depends on the company. US economy has shifted from production to service. Could have something to do with the relative ease of moving a business from location to location. Far less concern about raw materials, facility, transportation of finished goods, etc. Some businesses are now less constrained by location. It's not unlike a sports franchise which moves for based on the best offer from cities. The owners put in little. The taxpayers' foot the bill. But some businesses are created/benefited.
