My son is a railroad engineer and has been on the job for 25 years. Five years ago he was driving one mile long trains from KC to Des Moines. Things were OK, the rails were maintained well, the engines were repaired and updated regularly, and crewed adequately.
Since then things have soured. The companies fired or laid off yard workers, mechanics, and Conductors. They pulled hundreds of engines off line. The trains now are often 17,000 feet (3 miles+) long. The rails are not as well maintained and instead of buying new parts they are getting parts from the pulled engines.
If the Biden Administration cannot come up with a solution, your local grocery shelves will be empty by mid October.
