IMHO the US Military has been an amateur act for the last 50-60 years. The Navy halted the Fitzgerald courts-martial because a lot of information came out about "sailors" who didn't know the first thing about seamanship. Vietnam was the bloody fiasco it was because, as one Army general said "Too many battalion and brigade commanders were trying to punch their tickets instead of actually lead".

Lyndon Johnson personally picked bombing targets, selecting targets that had no real value, and cost a lot of lives to attak.
