I doubt we'll see another Vietnam. A demoralized, downsized military, thousands of people kicked out for refusing the jab, the Army fell way short in meeting its recruiting goals-wonder what the re-enlistment rate is like ? News stories about the Russians bringing equipment out of mothballs. saw a news story in The Wall Street Journal that said there was a lot of cleaning out of cupboards to support Desert Shield/Desert Storm.Comment

We 'cleaned out our cupboards' too in Vietnam. I went to 'Nam in '66 with WW2 era field equipment. A lot of ordnance for artillery, mortars, bazookas and bombs were of WW2 era munitions. Even the mess hall equipment was WW2 era!Comment

You've mentioned this before and never explained how that M2 Carbine got wrapped around that tree. I take it the two of you didn't get along?Comment

My first tour I was an Adviser. I was issued an M2 Carbine (Same as the M1 but with full auto capability to make it even more useless) but carried a Garand. My second tour I was a company commander, and bullied my battalion commander into getting me 2 M14 sniper rifles (this was before the M21 was standardized.) I had one man who had been to the 3rd Marine Division Sniper School, so he got one of them and I got the other.Comment

Vern, you have some great history to relate.
I guess I can remember seeing the local combatants carrying M-1 Garands.
So, eating fish all the time, doesn't make you tall. Carbines yes/ Garands no.
I spent my late sixties in Texas working on the A4 Skyhawk. To be perfectly clear, I never went to VN, but my brother got shelled on the Blue Ridge. If you ever saw the pics of Marines having their rifles thrown over board, that was the Blue Ridge. Helos too. All that. It was a command ship. My brother is so cool.If I should die before I wake...great,a little more sleep.Comment

I served with the 3rd Marine Division -- that division had an Army Brigade under it's operational control, and I can legitimately wear the 3rd Marine Division patch.Vern, you have some great history to relate.
