I'm always amazed at people leaving everything to the last minute...

I stopped by Safeway today to get some tonics (for my GTs)
and found the parking lot completely full. I left as I have enough
    to tide me over,
Why do people leave things to the last minute when the choice
of goods will be limited and the checkout line will be miles long ?
I realize some have no choice but that doesn't account for the
huge crowds at the various local Stores.
When a hurricane is scheduled to arrive Monday afternoon.
folks will be buying plywood Monday morning.
    Never fails.

Happens here too! Our biggest grocery store announced this year "We will be closed Thanksgiving Day, if you don't have by the day before, you won't get it on Thanksgiving Day!"

Grew up with Blue Laws. Even pharmacies were closed unless they could justify the need for a Sunday license. Teenage Rite of Passage was knowing where to get beer on Sunday so you could work on the car or bike. Made life a lot calmer and less hurried.

There used to be an add on TV for a mutual fund company, "No one plans to fail, but a lot of people fail to plan."

"Some people will be late to their own funeral." Whenever I hear someone deriding "preppers", the phrase "stocking up" comes to mind.

I live so far back in the hills that Monday doesn't get here until Thursday. We live 3/4 of a mile off the county road.

We occasionally have power outages due to severe weather, so I have a fully-finished basement with a Buck woodstove. When the power goes out, Jane and I would live in the basement until it went back on. One year (Feb '08 to Feb '09) we spent a total of 30 days and nights living in the basement. Trees were down everywhere, due to a massive ice storm that came at the end of that time, and it took two days to chain-saw our way out to the county road.

You could say we're "preppers." We now have a full-house back up propane generator (we used to use a small gas generator to power the refrigerator and freezer) and we keep at least 2 month's supply of canned goods and other foodstuffs on hand.

Where we live, that's only common sense.

Common sense seems to be a rare commodity these days, especially in DC.
