Mother Nature has no time for idiots ...

If you go wandering off into the wilderness without first
checking the weather you're a nit wit. If you go without
adequate clothing, water, food, a knife and compass or map
you're a double nit wit. Most nit wits who do this go off
with nothing but their trusty phone and expect others to risk
their necks to pull their dumb necks out of the mess they
get themselves into. If they'd been in the Scouts or the Army
they be a lot wiser but as it is they blithely wander off right
into the unforgiving arms of Mother Nature who doesn't
    give a sh!t.

I am of the view that people who do things like that should be made to pay 100% of the costs of their rescue

We have a S&R surcharge on hunting and fishing licenses to defray the cost. 75 cents? Or if yer an enviro a hikers card for $10/year.

      Does not include airfare.

People get lost all the time. People get lost for all sorts of reasons. And, inevitably, when someone gets lost, there are always statements about how such folks deserve whatever they get, etc., etc. And, very happily, when someone gets lost, lots of folks respond doing what they can to try and find those lost folks. We do it every day. Last week a small child in our community wandered out behind their home. This child was found a little over a day later and is now safe with his family. My phone went off as did the phones of many others asking that we all be on the look out for this child. Local emergency personnel and police were looking. Thank God that little child was found. If this lost man can be found and returned to his family, it will be a good thing. Regardless of whatever else anyone might thing, there is no bad that comes from lost people being found and returned to their families. Sincerely. bruce.

In the case of children or of people who simply get lost near home while on a walk, it is appropriate for the community to respond. My comment that people should pay for their rescue was meant to apply to people who hike in the wilderness without a guide or training or go back country skiing where they are consciously performing an act that is known to be dangerous.

Agree with Mark. Here in Maine a search for Alost hiker (usually from away) comes out of the Wardens budget so they are short of funds at the end of the year.
