It is said that there is nothing better for morale than the sight of a dead general. Actually, I have read that senior officers in the Russian Army tend to be close to the action. I think that this may be a holdover from WWII when Russian generals who made mistakes were often shot for incompetence. That made them keep a close eye on things.
