Russia isn?t just fighting Ukraine. it?s fighting the future

A long read and very interesting!

Militarily, Russia?s once-feared army has been massively diminished. According to the United Nations, as many as 60,000 Russian soldiers have died since the start of the fighting a year ago. (Ukrainian estimates, meanwhile, place the tally at much higher: nearly 146,000). If even the smaller number is accurate, Russia has lost four times as many forces in one year of war in Ukraine than it did during a decade of occupation in Afghanistan. It has also helped shatter the image of Russia?s army as a formidable fighting machine that had prevailed, and influenced the thinking of Western strategic planners, for the past three decades.

A year into the brutal invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin is giving no signs of abandoning its war of choice. In his February 21st State of the Nation address, Vladimir Putin signaled what amounted to a redoubled commitment to his “special military operation” against Kyiv. “Step by step, carefully and consistently we will deal with […]

Russian doctrine is adapted to a poorly trained force with lots of troops. They have abandoned that doctrine, but the troops aren't any better trained, and there are a lot less of them,

I believe it is all about money, a lack of it that is.

Whenever a country, any country develops new technology Russia always claims they've had it for years and theirs is bigger, better, faster and they have more of them.

I remember when the MOAB was developed here and blasted off the coast of Florida. Russia's rebuttal was they had the "Father of all Bombs", a larger version.

Most everything they have of any importance was copied from other nations. They may or may not have what they say but it appears it is usually a theory, a limited production, an untested model or a dud that has now been "perfected".

The olden day rules of ground troops has always been "don't retreat or you'll be shot (by us)" so I suppose that is suppose to be the bulk of their training and loyalty.

Looks like Putin is using the countries money for other things.

You have to admit, he has good taste in women, at least this one.

A critique I often heard of the Soviet-now Russian-military was they were better drilled than us but not trained. Junior officers not allowed to show initiative, as a result, too much waiting for orders, kicking things up the chain of command, when confronted with situations not in the manuals....plus their maintenance and logistics often weak.

By now putin and his crew are singing their theme song ... "You and me against the world..." Tough. The true believers will support putins screw up to the last drop of someone else's blood and the last ruble in someone else's bank account. The russians have a history of handling such politicians. Will be interesting to see if they do it quietly or make a public spectacle of it. Sincerely. bruce.

That's about it. Their tactics were built around their weaknesses.
