Like everything Russia claims their equipment and technology is leaps and bounds above everyone else's. So why, after cleaning out their museums are they now getting T-54 and T-55 tanks from their reserve/scrapyards to fight the Ukrainians?

Those older tanks are probably easier to maintain, not that dependent on electronics-the KISS principle. If I were a Russian soldier armed with a Mosin-Nagant that I knew how to use-like Siimo Hayha or Lydumilla Pavlichenko-I wouldn't feel so bad. -
I guess they've run out of other obsolete tanks like the T62 heavies they were sending before now. As far as the T90 which is a T72 upgrade being the best tank in the world....the combat record of the other T72 variants in combat against western tanks tells the tale.
I do believe overall that the best Russian tanks (T80 and T90) which as I said are T72 upgrades (very significant upgrade in the case of the T90) are suffering from poor tactics and insufficiently trained crews. I also suspect that the Rooskies are leery of having any more of their limited supply of T90s destroyed or captured. The "Ukes" are operating several captured T90 tanks against their former owners right now.
The lack of Russian discipline is shown by the large amount of captured Russian heavy weapons the Ukrainians are using against them. There is no excuse for most of that stuff not having been destroyed to keep it out of Ukrainian hands.
Quality wise, the Russian Army today looks much inferior to the Soviet Armies of WW II. This is especially shocking when the efforts of the Russians to professionalize their armed forces over the last 25 years.Last edited by Art; 03-23-2023, 03:44.Comment
