Members of a recently formed Russian assault unit say their commanders deployed troops to stop them from retreating and threatened them with death after they suffered ?huge? losses in eastern Ukraine.

This is an age old practice of theirs that is so common it is portrayed in movies.

You would think over time that they would learn not to kill their own soldiers.

Ever watch "A Fairwell to Arms" -- the original version with Gary Cooper? It opens with the Italian Army in full retreat after the battle of Caporetto. Battle Police are dragging men out of the retreating mass, and shooting those who can't give a good account for themselves.
