A small Conservative win in Canada

A by-election was held yesterday in the riding of Toronto-St Pauls. This riding has been held by the Liberals for decades and was considered to be one of the safest Liberal seats in Canada. They lost. The riding was won (narrowly) by the Conservative Candidate.

By-elections are odd things and this was one of the oddest ever. By my count, there were 83 candidates, most of whom were registered as Independents but there was also a Marxist-Leninist Party candidate (57 votes), one from the Marijuana Party (29 votes), one from the Rhinocerous Party (51 votes) and oddly, one independent who got zero votes (presumably he didn't even vote for himself). Most got only a half dozen votes. What makes this odd is that to register, you need signatures from 100 voters in the riding

The Liberals are so low in the polls that if an election were held today, Trudeau would probably lose his own seat in parliament

for those of us south of you, what is a riding? is that what we would call a district or precinct here in the states?

Yes. A Riding is also known as an Electoral District. The term is used at the Federal and Provincial levels but at the municipal level, the electoral district is usually known as a Ward

In our primary the RINO won to replace Lauren Boebert, who switched districts to replace RINO Ken Buck. Independents can vote in either primary, only one. I'll go to the county meet to find out what their participation was.
