One thing that occurs to me when there is a mass shooting or political shooting (or planned shooting in this case) is that the media always give the shooter a lot of space - photos, stories, his or her background, talking heads galore being interviewed on TV, more photos, interviews with witnesses, interviews with people who know the person, etc.
It seems to me that in many cases, the perpetrator wants the attention and notoriety and that is just what happens. I know that its naive and is probably against the principle of a free press, but really, maybe its time to ask / demand / legislate that the media stop giving these people their 15 minutes of fame and not reveal their identities for a period of time - say 5 years.
