Question: Notice the Lyman sights; the gage in front of/behind
the peep sight, which model is correct or both correct for these late rifles?

Should be in front on a 48C, but Brophy says sights and other parts were often mixed up during re-conditioning.

Correct me if I'm mistaken about this, Herschel, but don't think 48C is supposed to have the turn-down peep of commercial 48s; however, my (only) M2 has the same sight, which I've always assumed was a replacement.

I believe the 48S with the turn-down peep was only used on the NRA Sporters. A lot of parts swapping has occurred. I even have done some myself.

        LAH,

I recorded S/N 21129 as sold in a Cowan auction on May 2, 2012. I called Cowan's to ask the barrel date which was 7-42. I didn't bid even though it's the highest S/N I've seen also.

Next highest I've seen in photos is 21089 (5-42 bbl). I am the fortunate owner of 20205 (7-42 bbl). It has the gage in front of the peep as does 21129. But then so does my sales M2 rifle; S/N 5833 (4-37 bbl).

        Hope this helps!
