Surprised by 10/22 international from estate

Bought my son a 10/22 when he was 6, shot like crap. Estate sale picked up laminated SS International. Got it cheap as new, 3x9 decent scope. Did not expect much. Put a Vol.....trigger group in. Took barrel off lapped with about 200 strokes of JB paste. Had it at plinking range, poor rest. CCI HI Vel. Win target, Rem target. It was shooting dime size at 50 ft. I was amazed. Long stock stiffen barrel? Might bed it. Any experts

I have a couple of 10/22's that I put heavy barrels on. One will shoot dime sized groups at 50 yds the other one not so much.

AW yes, Ruger 10/22. buy for 200 dollars and spend 500 to get it to shoot straight. Had a Mini 14---would not hit a barn at 100 yd. Also one of their neat looking bolt guns which used a mag like a 10/22 (72/22?) and would not hold its zero for a week! No more Rugers for me.
You can never go home again.

Over the years I've owned a number of Rugers. Some good, some bad. If they shoot well then I'm happy. But it's all too common to find a 'dog' that won't group. The last 10/22 I bought was a T model and I was expecting better accuracy than the average 10/22. "That dog won't hunt". Gave it away since it was a hopeless dog and a continuing frustration.

I believe that anytime you connect a barrel to a receiver with what amounts to a "C-clamp", as in the 10-22, you CANNOT expect any type of accuracy . . . . at least what I call accuracy . . . . without other modifications to the rifle to make up for this "engineering faux-pa"! ---Jim

I have several 10/22 rifles which have had the barrel removed from the action temporarily, the rear faced off 0.2", rechambered with a tighter reamer, and had other things done to the bolt and bedding. They look stock, but they usually will not extract a unfired cartridge. They shoot better than dime sized groups at 50 yards. There are a number of gunsmiths at Rim Fire Central that specialize in doing this.

For the record I hate rugers. But you spend a lot trying to make them shoot. What I'm saying. Lapping barrel makes all the difference. I lapped FA tanker, and a lot of M1's, SoCom, and others it makes a huge difference. Old American Rifleman, and Percision Shooting articles describe method. It really makes a huge difference. Totally bedded a Win 100 308, lapped bbl, polished gas piston, made sure op rod did not touch anything. Under 1 inch, with old 150 core Loks, reloads from 1960. Lapping really works

I have had or worked on some 10/22 rifles that shot exceptionally well. Never had one that shot "like crap" for a small game hunting rifle, which is all they are. 1/2" groups at 25yds is very good for a dependable little .22 carbine, that sells for $200, IMHO.

Your right 4f I fore got to mention I had early one to. I guess what I'm saying. Without fancy stocks and barrels you can make them shoot. And apply simple fixes to all none custom rifles.

I have a friend that bought one new years ago,

shot very well, he put a decent scope on it,

however he was always a bit miffed when my 75 and 52 would out do it,,
