    Winchester 1907 SLR

I've got a thing for the old classic semi-auto rifles used by Law Enforcement back in the day for "high risk" arrests. The Remington 8 and 81, as well as the Winchester '07, were used by State, Local, and Federal Officers to take on John Dillinger, Lester Gillis ("Baby-face Nelson"), and Bonnie and Clyde.

I've posted pics of my Remington 81...here is my Winchester '07 SLR. It shoots a .351 Winchester Self Loading round.

Nice! You sure have an eclectic collection! How do you compare the 05 & 07 to the Rem 8/81? I have heard the Rem handles better with more powerful ammo. I suppose sales told the tale which one won out.

        Thanks, Shooter.

Kinda like Mannparks says...my Remington 81 shoots .30 remington, which is basically a rimless 30/30. It kicks a lot more than you would think because of the action.

The .30 Remington is significantly more powerful than the .351 Winchester. The Winchester '07 is a nice, handy little package, however.

My younger son visited over July 4th weekend and we hit the range. Shot some of the lesser fired rifles, including the 1907 Winchester. Because of some initial problems sighting in a Garand, (unnoticed loose front sight), we ended up with limited time to shoot some of the other rifles, including the '07.

I also found a source for a limited quantity of .351 WSL loaded ammunition.

My son shot this 3 round group at 50 yards with the PCI ammo. It seemed to shoot about as well as the Buffalo Arms ammo. Noted that the trigger was heavy with a lot of creep.

              About $60 for a box of 50.

Not cheap by any means, considering that M1 carbine ammo, which is smaller, but similar to the .351 ammo, is about 1/3 that price.

Carbine ammo is very close to the 32 Winchester Self Loading cartridge used in the slightly smaller Model 05 Winchester.

Midway USA indicates that Jamison brass for the 351 is "coming soon" whatever that means:

A gentleman named John Henwood wrote a nice book about the 05, 07 and 10 model Winchesters that he titled The Forgotten Winchesters. He discusses reloading and forming brass for the various WSL cartridges at length, as well as disassembly and assembly directions, using the advice "begin early or you'll miss dinner".

Unfortunately, Mr. Henwood has passed on a few years ago and his book on the WSL's is only available on the secondary market. There is a copy shown as available on this list for $75 (I do not know or have any affiliation with the seller):

Calfed, Mr. Henwood also wrote a book on the Remington semi-autos named The 8 and 81 that is also supposed to be good. There are several offered on Amazon starting at a little over fifty bucks. Certainly not cheap for either book but where else you gonna get one.

Thanks, Andouille--I'll look into those books.

Well that's all nice and now find a bullet!
I have used 35 7 diameter jacketed bullets sized them down to 351 with a lee sizer but I have found the best bullets in that gun the 07 that is, is a 35 caliber 180 grain size down to 351 but the bullet is a little long so I have to cut the tip off of it lots and lots of Labor
But it was fun to do

I had some correspondence with Mr. Henwood regarding the Winchester book, and found him to be a gentleman in every respect. He also wrote a book about the K-framed Smith & Wesson revolvers and if those are any indication, the Model 8 book would be quite good as well.
