Number Meaning on Front of Bolt Release of No. 4 Mk 1*

On the front of the bolt, the part that one flips up to release the bolt from the action, there is a number stamped on it. A number 1 is on mine but I've seen others with a 2. What does this number mean.

On the bolt head? That would be the size number. Boltheads on the No4's came in sizes 0 thru 3 typically. It was a manufacturing shortcut to reduce the time it takes to headspace a rifle.
The previous SMLE's needed to have the boltface polished into spec which took time and skill.

You're more than welcome. Once you start getting a few of those books you asked about in your other thread, you'll start asking even more questions. That's because you'll know what questions to ask!
