US Savage No4 mk1*

I have a US Savage No4 mk 1*, very accurate rifle using some South Africian ball ammo, scary accurate. Today was the first time shooting this rifle. I noticed 2 marks on the receiver ring, one look like a "U" with an arrowhead facing up and the second is alittle smaller, but is a U with an arrowhead facing downward. Can anyone tell me what these marks mean? Thanks, Ken
