That'd be the M40A1. I saw one of those stocks on McM's web site for $1K. The M40 had a plain walnut stock like a 700 BDL Varmint Special without the checkering and decorative plastic, just sling attachments and a metal buttplate.

Sorry! (Now I have to say something else so I have at least ten characters.)

id bet Remington has a few replacements for the replica they offered over the last few years.
i made mine from a ADL, opened it for a BDL, and sanded off the checkering.
lots of work, but it looks good.

I just remembered something. If you've done any stock work or even craft woodwork, a lot of times you can find a take-off Remington 40XB repeater walnut stock at a gun dealer's or on the web, cheap. The barrel channel will be inletted oversize for a heavy bbl. The forend will be fat so that'll have to be taken down and shaped. It won't have any checkering or plastic, though, which is good in this instance, and it's normally a strong, dense piece of plain walnut. Shooter's Corner (I assume it's the same JB White who's a member here) sometimes has one on its web site, also the benchrest.com buy-sell is a good place to look.

If I remember correctly the 40XB stock does not have the raised cheek piece that a proper M40 stock has. So you're stuck with a MUCH sanded ADL stock or a custom stock, if you want to build an exact clone.

Yeah, that's a fact. I looked at one of my XB's and there doesn't look to be enough comb, even if it were re-shaped. Well, he can - should - still check w/ Remington about a spare.

I've been doing some internet surfing, and found several companies, Wenig is just the one that readily comes to mind,....anyway they advertise that they can reproduce "factory" stocks, so when I get ready to build an M40 clone, I think I will see if somebody could make me a ADL stock minus the checkering, inletted for the removable BDL type floor plate.

Yeah I read that the "real" M40's used Winchester M70 floor pates, but mines just a clone, and I can live with the Remington floor plate to keep things simple.

Yes, as above but the floor plate and guard were a dull matte black. The change to modified Win. M70 bottom metal I believe started around 2001 with the M40A3
