US marked Remington M721 ??

Does anyone have any information on the military use of the Model 721? Here's a picture that looks awfully odd to me.
Zooming in it looks like the U was struck upside down and then struck right side up slightly off to the right, giving it the appearance of an elongated O.
Seems strange an armorer would make that mistake. Anyone seen anything like this or any ideas?

dont think its a US rifle, however, some 721,s were used during sniper rifle trials, a few are on display at the RIA museum, though the cal, is .280 .270. and .276 i belive..
found it strange that non were in 30-06. and non were US marked as well.

This rifle (30-06) is coming up for sale and is just advertised as US marked Remington...which in a way it is. The only reference I could find in regards to military 721 use is that very few were bought in deference to M70s. It has a 1953 date code but the way it is stamped is suspicious to me. If you blow up the picture it looks like the U was stamped upside down and then over struck and slightly to the right.

It's being sold by a reputable firm but it just baffles me as to authenticity.

If it were U.S. property I'd expect to see the roll stamp on the receiver near the SN. What's pictured looks more like one of Remington's proof marks or assembly/inspection codes followed by somebody's initial. Remington used to have a historian lady who'd know what every mark meant but she was at Ilion, which is RIP.

Thanks for all the comments. I looked at the rifle today and it is authentic, with Navy release papers. The scope is numbered to the rifle. It's estimated to sell at $1000-$1500.

I remember seeing Remington 721's that were trophies for winners at the National Rifle Matches, Cp Perry, OH in the late 1950's or early 1960's. I have read somewhere that the Navy had a large number of the 721's. I seem to recall that the Navy had them for award to high navy shooters but am not certain.

yup herschel, have seen the same Navy Trophy rifles, but could never afford 1. Have never heard how they shot either.

If I remember correctly, At the outbreak of WWII the US government bout nearly all of the 721's that had been produce from remington. They were not issued and sat in storage until the navy started to give them away as trophies. They only ones I've ever seen were not drilled/tapped and sold for about $1400 or more.

I am never really surprised to see a U.S. marked firearm of any type. I have seen U.S. marked L.C. Smith shotguns. When I was in Korea we had some Savage 311 shotguns that were U.S. marked that we were allowed to check out for hunting.

I also have heard of Model 721's being used as trophy rifles until the government's supply was expended.

I don't believe the 721/722 came out until after WWII. I believe it was the Model 720 that the government bought and later used as trophy rifles.
