    USMC M40 Remington "Commemortive"

The local gunshop has a USMC M40 Remington "Commemortive". This in the original box. Any ideas as to when this was manufactured and what it is worth?

These rifles currently sell for around $1500-$2000. The ones in the higher range are unfired, have the box, documentation and the special sniper coin that came with it. Some of the early rifles did not come with the sniper coin though. I believe Remington made 1000 of these rifles. They are very accurate shooters. Badger Ordnance made a reproduction mount and ring set and Leupold made about 200 green scopes for thie original run of rifles.

I bought one, scrounged up a set of '66 rings and a base and a black Redfield 3X9 accu-range scope with the tomb stone range finder for it fired about 40 rounds through it. It was very accurate for a non-glass bedded rifle.

I saved the Remington web page as a .doc file 2 years ago. http://mysite.verizon.net/stuems/m40.doc

Are these rifles marked on the receiver as M-40's and are they long actions or short? Also what type of buttplate is on this rifle?

Here is how they are marked. Special serial number, otherwise marked as the originals were with the U.S. Rollstamp. The buttplate is the aluminum buttplate that is colored black, again just like the originals.

The Remmy Retros are pretty good but they did miss a few easy things:

The unpainted side of the butt plate, should all be black.
                    The bolt handle is off.
                    The Safety is wrong.

Chuck Mawhinney is selling 103 of these rifles with a signed floorplate and numbers "1 of 103" "2 of 103"

It comes with a Green Lupy made to look similar to a Redfield and a Repro base made by Badger Ordnance.
