    adventure in paperpatching for 45-70

I wanted to try out paperpatching in 45-70 for the trapdoor. After some research I decided to try with coffee filter paper. Its tough and has low ash content. Spent an hour making my pattern for Lee 457-500-F mould. I beagled the mould so it threw . 459 bullets. They weigh 505 grains with 1 to 20 tin to lead pour. Went with 60 degree cuts on both ends of paper. Sized bûllets down to. 452. Two wraps of paper put it back to .459. Used the simple twist end for now.

Had issue at first with paper tearing when pushing bullet into brass case. Flared brass more àndwiped light layer of wax on paper, went right in. Put thin veg was between bullet and 45 grains compressed pyrodex.

Loaded same load with bullets lubed with SP lube to compare velocity and accuracy. Now need time to get to range

      paper patch bullets

A long time ago, I made a cylindrical paper patch mould for the 45-70. This mould was a nose pour type and could be adjusted for bullet weight, Also made a few different types of of base and nose designs. The mould was made out of aluminum. I used different types of paper for the bullets too. Black powder was used in a Remington rolling block heavy barrel rifle with a large tang rear sight that I also made for this rifle. These bullets appeared to be just as accurate as the regular cast bullets but I got into a heavy barrel breech seater 32-40 Hi Wall with a Hoch nose pour mould and never went back to the 45-70.

I hear ya. I'm just strictly playing in this endeavor. It will be interesting to see if I can sqeeze any more accuracy out of PP boolets versus the lubed ones.
