    Hodgdon Triple 7

Using Hodgdon Triple 7 granular powder: Has anyone used it to load 45-70 rounds with either the 405 or 500gr. lead bullet in an original trapdoor?

I would load it like Pyrodex by using a volumetric measure. Set the grain weight for what you want, fill then tap once to level then dump into the case. I would not weigh the charges like BP. I gave up on pyrodex years ago and now stick to Goex BP. Since I shoot in the N-SSA I have a ready supply of BP on hand. What do you hope to gain with 777 that BP wont do? My load for my original trapdoor is 60 grains of 2f primer hole drilled out with #41 drill bit and a MLR primer. The 500 grain bullet is the Rapine govt bullet sized to .460.

Black powder is very scarce in my area. So, was looking for a substitute powder other than smokeless. I have used Trail Boss and other smokeless powders tho. I really like to shoot BP, but, I am down to 2 cans of ffg.

I load triple 7 FFG under a 405gr cast bullet, LEE 90374, in my 45-70 and have no issues with it, I am using 40 gr by weight, or 55gr by volume, just enough to fill the case to the bottom of a seated bullet, I am getting about 1250 FPS. I have used this load in 4 traps and have shot 600 rounds so far.

Major Tom, order your blk powder from powder inc, maine powder house or another supplier, no reason for it to be hard to get.

If you order the maximum amount allowed instead of just a pound then the shipping and hazmat fees are very reasonable. I buy mine when I go to winchester VA from the back creek shop right outside the N-SSA range.
