    loading 45-70

Browning Model 1885. I have been using 38 gr of Varget behind a Lyman 500gr schmitzer 95% lead bullet with great results but running low on Varge . Any suggestions for a lighter load using IMR 4895 or 4064? I use 1 gr of cotton for wadding. Max range is 200 yrd on cast bullet (25 point) target. Thanks

Trail Boss if you can find it. No fill required and I don't think you could double charge anything.

I'd rethink the 500 grain bullet for a lighter load. Think physics.
There is cast 485 grain IMR4895 and 4064 data on Hodgdon's site under TrapDoor loads. Should do ok for a cast 500.
There's one H 4895 load for a cast 525 Beartooth bullet. Guy says he shoots it out of a Marlin and a BFR revolver.
      Spelling and grammar count!

You may not be able to double charge it but you "don't" want to compress it very much, bad things can happen.

I don't shoot compressed loads. If the book calls for a compressed loading I find another powder.
