I recently traded for a M1882 Remington-Lee rifle with what I think is the proper bayonet. I am puzzled by the M1884 rear sight on the rifle because all the on-line info says the rifle should have a M1879 rifle sight marked with a R-L. Is there anyway the M1884 sight could be considered as correct?

My thinking is that it well could be a "original" (defined as during period of use) replacement, but it surely would NOT be correct for "as made".
It will all hinge on the match of color and patina, plus any buggering of the screws. If the color/wear is good, and the screws are pristine, I'd say you were OK.
As an aside, wish I had an 1882 (instead of my 1885 Navy) but one never came along, back when I was in buying mode. I have no complaints though - I was very lucky in building my collection.Comment
