    Trapdoor Cadet Barrel Markings

I have an 1873 model Cadet Rifle with the following barrel markings.
On the top of the barrel, near the receiver is what appears to be the bottom part of the letter A, not completely stamped.
On the bottom of the barrel is stamped a symbol similar to a small letter s ,and below it is the letter P, and below that a small y. These are the only markings on the barrel and it has the Buffington sight.
This rifle is number 203XXX and has a 2 piece trigger guard with a serrated trigger and sling swivel.
The stock is the correct length, with 9 inch comb, and has no markings, and the butt plate tang has what appears to be
    113 stamped on it.
Any information about this rifle will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul

The "A" on the top of the barrel is quite common on rifles, carbines, and cadets, and is sometimes not well struck. The markings (other than one or more large "P"s) on the bottom of barrels have not been extensively studied. They surely had a purpose during manufacture, but the details of which are unknown today.

If you want me to check the serial, I'll have to have the whole number.

Your rifle does seem to have some minor inconsistencies, but I'll respond at greater length when I'm at my records, perhaps this evening.
