    Model 1868 Serial/Barrel Numbers

I'm sure this issue has been raised previously but as a relatively new Forum member I am unaware of meaning of an extraneous 4 digit number stamped on the right side of the barrel near the witness/inspector marks on my rifle. As can be seen, the font for this numbers differ from the serial no. so expect that the 4 digit number was added sometime after issue. Any insight most gratefully appreciated! Pictures attached:

That type of marking is more often seen (in the same place) on Model 1870 Rifles, where it is sometimes assumed to be a serial number, which - as you state - it is not. I'm thinking it must be some sort of "inventory" number perhaps.

      Thanks Dick:

I read your chapter on the 1868's again hoping the answer was buried in there somewhere. I guess this just one of those things that makes collecting so enjoyable................
