Trapdoor with JSA/1898 cartouche

Noticed this interesting item on GB - hadn’t seen one of master armorer Adams’ stamps on a trapdoor before. What’s the story here? For all the trapdoors that saw service in the SAW I don’t see JSA cartouches with any frequency. (Does look like there’s the ghost of an earlier cartouche in the typical location.)

Quite unusual on a full length rifle, much better known on converted Cadets. Mine is stamped JSA/1895, and I have the matching crate that once held 20 of them.

FWIW, a point of information - Joseph Sumner Adams, [J.S.A.], was the Assistant-Foreman of the Springfield Armory - Assembly Room.

Adams was never given the title of "Master Armorer".

He was given the responsibility of inspecting new arms at Springfield, following the death of Master Armorer, Samuel W. Porter, in June of 1894.
