Hi, Any info on this number 537365? It is marked above butt plate on comb with 71 H 72 From reading on here I know those are rack, company and unit numbers but what order would they go in? any help would be appreciated thank you. pictures provided bellow.

No hit in the SRS books. Most around it are for New York units. Google 71 st New York in the Spanish war. And look for company H. Hope this helps.

My understanding is that the regular army never authorized defacing the stock in this manor. This was the work of a reserve unit or national guard.

Thanks for all the info. Yes and the 71st New York was a national guard unit.
