    Springfield krag carbine

Hello from north Carolina's obx sandbar. Recently inherited a Springfield model 1898 krag carbine. Having trouble determining the year it was made and if it is indeed a carbine or cut down rifle. Reciever stamp a little faded so it almost looks like it says model 1896, however the serial number is 103xxx. The barrel is 22 inches but no c stamped on the rear sight. There is also a U stamped on the barrel band. Any ideas about this would be really appreciated. Thanks.

      Brian - Welcome!

Serial number 103XXX was likely a model 1896 rifle built around, April to June, 1898. Number is not in range used for model 1896 carbines.

A clear close picture of your front-sight would tell volumes.
