Some cats like to bring gifts showing they are working for you. I use to have a cat that would bring me corn snakes it had killed.

Flop Ears' internal clock is set at 0400.
We go out around then for a short hike - every day except when roads are icy. She left me sleep until 0430 once last week, and it sure felt strange to wake up so late. She had a different experience this morning (for her) - coyotes were singing not that far away. Call of the wild! SW

After 2 1/2 decades of Night Shift, I'm finally back to what I was doing from early childhood to mid 30's- up at 05:30. No alarm clock is required for that in normal living. That's just when I wake up, and it's time to go and get started. Got into that routine courtesy of Dad. I'd hear him on the stairs and hitting the can, and get up with him. We'd have toast and coffee together, and then go and start our individual days. I liked that a lot, especially the early morning quiet.

Our 2 acre yard is fenced in but still, when we had a dog we watched him like a hawk. When I was working rotating shift work and my wife was home alone with the dog she needed a way to walk him w/o going outside with him at night. She had me fence in an area (door access) where he could be let out at night, do his thing, and come back to the door to be let back in w/o having to be watched because the area was smaller and didn't provide as much for him to get into.
On mornings when I was up at 3-4am getting ready for work the same "dog yard" came in handy. Let him out--5 minutes later let him back in. During daylight hours he got run of the larger part of the yard.
