    Sat. coffee 1-3-26

3" new snow over-night, and it's still coming down. Warmed up to +9F, and there ain't much wind, so there's no hard pack drifts to get stuck in (yet).
Instead of putting on coffee here, went for donut shop coffee at the Tim's about 3 miles away. Little car accounts well for it's self in the snow. Wife wants w/m again today. We shall see. Wait an hour for road reports, and then decide. Still full from left over ham re-cooked with beans last night. Maybe a home made coffee and toast breakfast in a bit....

W.C. Fields once said "women are like elephants, interesting to look at but I wouldn't want to own one".

That's how we feel about snow down here.

Currently short sleeve weather along the Gulf Coast.

I also made beans with leftover ham. Great minds think alike! Temp in the 40s today which is quite uncommon for Jan. Not that I'm complaining.

I'd been bidding on a German forestry service cutlass, called a "deer catcher". (probably a glitch in the online translator) It's still affordable, but I noticed the handle was a very mellow color. Hmmm... ivory! Seller doesn't include an "antique ivory certificate" so I'm out. It would be past frustrating to have customs seize it because some poor elephant has dentures now.

Ah, well - there's always something interesting on the auctions. Always. Grandkids back to school tomorrow = parents and grandparents will be catching up on sleep. And restocking the cookie jar! SW

Here's a link to the "deer catcher". Auction is in Germany, so I'm going with this doesn't violate auction rules. SW

the big Norther Va Gunshow is officially kaput,
Ikea did a lease on the building,
so the temp replacement location is this weekend,

about 2/3s or so the size, (800 tables vs 1300) and in a shopping mall 25 minutes south of the old location,

I have a primo location, (helps to be liked by the promoter and her son , as well as a loyal patron, I guess)

odd to walk thru a mall and into a gunshow, but stranger things have happened I guess,

good show so far for a holiday weekend,

Well, there's not a single item in that mall that people have a constitutional right to own, however, just the opposite at the gun show.

today was a bit, slow, but it is still a holiday weekend,

overall a decent location, and a good weekend

local fire marshal had to come by Sat and flex a bit, but otherwise, we (as in my business) had a good show,

will add, the head count was exceptional for Fri and Sat, esp Sat,
so much so, some of the Mall business owners got a bit pissy since parking basically dissapeared,

but they will get over it or used to it,

Some of the earlier synthetics faded like that- the proprietary name escapes me now- not zytel- the stuff the old black 40's rotary dial telephones were made of. It'll probably come to me when I'm thinking of something else. Old table top radios were made out of the same thing.

Old cookie jar is empty. Not even crumbs. Great grand-kids have a nose for them too! I likes the occasional chocolate chip or six once in a while

A fellow who has written 2 books on the topic told me this is a senior forestry official's "cutlass", and those all had genuine ivory. There's still a good chance it's synthetic elephant teeth, but I'm not willing to risk it it being seized by customs. SW

Bakelite was the term I couldn't remember. Bakelite done white as prone to fading.
If the expert says Ivory, then the risks are indeed high. Unfortunate there is no grandfathering-in for antiques.
