Saturday coffee and conversation thread 6-27

Still storm weather here. Rained a LICK last night but only pea-size hail. I'm watching daughter's dogs while she's camping, and no surprise - they weren't too keen on going out to do their biz. But the storm rolled through & out they went. They're good mutts!

Still working on the rubber band MG I got for Christmas & making very slow progress. Finally got the receiver done - starting on the drum mag now. Hopefully, I'll get it done by 1st frost. I've got a WW2 locomotive kit I'd like to start, but I don't like to have 2 kits going at once - lose twice the small parts for the same money!

For today, it's go back over & let the dogs out a couple more times - maybe find a movie worth watching. Watched part of Fury and most of 12 O'clock High this week - both are near classics. SW

down in VA Beach (not BEach VA) For a gunshow,

had thought of skipping this one, but wanted to get in one more before our AW Ban takes over in July 1,

should have skipped it, it is less than average attendance wise, and a lot of tourist,
we are 9 blocks or so from the ocean, middle of the summer,

Forgot to mention earlier - there's an Oddfellows lodge next block over, and there were actually cars there last night. Must have been the quarterly meeting. In the past, they'd have a free pancake breakfast Sunday mornings - probably to promote new members. I actually wanted to attend that I(but not join). And there used to be cars parked around the block on meeting day. No more - there were 5 cars yesterday - from 3 states. I'd say it's pretty well dying off; especially since most of the members I saw were using walkers. As well as I know, Oddfellows is a holdover from WW1 - as seen in mention of "cooties". AKA lice.

I think the same is true for other social clubs like Lions or Mooses. Elks seems to hang on pretty well. Local Moose club moved to a smaller building... no word of Lions around here at all. Must be another casualty of the cell phone culture and fake book.

I thought about joining VF Dubya when I got out, but it was run by WW2 vets who had no time for Viet Nam vets. "it wasn't a real war!" Fine. I never went back and no interest in it now. SW

friend is a VFW member, and the old coots in that post are all VN vets
one post near him has a few members, no bar, and the other has a bar and food service,

seems most of the younger guys, he says, are too busy with life, kids etc, to join and participate,

even the big VFW hall in Dale City ( they hold a gunshow in the hall) is mostly old farts, lots of them in DC/Nova,

Moose still strong here, got at least 2 in the county,
dad was a member since way back when it was the only place to go get a beer in some of the towns he stayed in while working,

        the rest, no idea,
know a couple guys in the Ruritans, they both make a decent quart of stew each year (I usually buy 8 quarts to last a while)

The Legions aren't doing well here. They are our version of VFW halls, and most are licensed for booze.
Dad was less than impressed with them, and he was a WW II vet himself. He never went after he quit drinking.

Been very wet here. It's been one chain of thunderstorms after another for almost 10 days now.
Did manage a few old car pix on Sunday.

Chevy Van 108. This one's definitely ex commercial fleet. There isn't even an a.m. radio in it.

Burnished "chrome" grill suggests '68 or '69. They were painted white by '70 (which was the last year for them. The C series vans were introduced that year) Chrome bumpers on it are after market.

"3 on the tree" three speed manual. Dollars to donuts there's a big six in it.

So-so paint job. I don't really care for the button hole aluminum rims. It would look better on a set of Center Lines.

We had a '70 Sport Van 90 that was a little more optioned.

          ETA:

These still pull at the heart strings a bit. Love the body style on these. I did a lot of my early driving in our '70.

          Stuff to remember:

George and Ringo duetting on the instrumental lead of "Let It Be"- Ringo with brushes on cymbals, and George with his hollow body Gibson.
Ringo was a much more accomplished drummer than he gets credit for, and influenced a lot of people.

I know most are basically the same, as in Ford/Dodge/Chevy , in regards to looks and such, but I still like the fugly sister Corvair versions (corvan ?)

tho to me, the dodge with the dog dish headlights look the neatest

Corvair van? About as nasty as a V-dub pickup. The V-dub 23 window vans are worth a ton of $ somehow. Stand-up comic, Fluffy Iglesias collects them. SW

they did a pickup version called a ramp sider, since it had a gate at the rear, and a fold down ramp on the side

goodwill near the hotel I Was in for the Hampton show had a carshow that Sat night, and there were several VW's, including a couple of the vans,
