The Minefield first opened as a public forum, without moderation or posted rules. I had followed a troll to Gunboards from The Parallax forums and found my troll on page 3 of the brand new forum. Troll hunting was a thing back then. He didn't last long. I stayed when I started to see 'field as an opportunity to learn about the people in my newly adopted hobby as well as the Makarovs, Mosins, etc. that were starting to fill up the gunsafe. Respect grew as time moved on and post counts grew, reset and grew again (x3)

The old 'field is gone.
My (self perceived) role as a forum member has changed. This is not an experiment in what happens when you put a bunch of gun-owners in a space and let them fend for themselves. I understand that we don't want poor behavior to spill over to the 'proper' forums but who says we're going to misbehave? Nass isn't here. I'm sorry that he was able to normalize gunts and gheyness as a 'we don't judge' mindset part and parcel of being a Minefielder.

Of course we judge. It's the freakin internet. That's what people do.
I believe we're aware of the persistence of what we do... and say.
Jim understood this and that's where we clashed. We both practiced our own versions of 'moderate by example'.

I thought Stacy's, 'Gatekeeper' approach was inspired. I loved that woman.

I was thinking about our last exchange when I came across a guy who explained his rationale for having a different screen name for each of the many boards and forums he's a member of, as... 'basic internet security'. Seemed like a creative explanation. I don't see how he keeps them all straight, or if he even does.
