Not in a good mood today

Damn convention center our anime convention has used for the last 4 years just gave us the contract for this year - and it's 3 time higher than last year!

We're now scrambling to find another venue that a little more affordable. We've found a couple and hopefully they can give us a decent proposal and the dates we want.

Just shooting from the hip here. I don't know how much space you need but most towns/cities have smaller "community centers" often used for voting during elections, wedding ceremonies, class reunions, etc. Other sources may be hotels. A lot of them have conference rooms for business meetings.

I think you can rule out churches and school buildings. I once belonged to a small gun club and one of the local banks let us have the bank after hours for our meeting. Even gave us the key. Sounds unbelievable but what could have been stolen? All the money goes in the vault before closing.

You may have to go out of town to find something suitable. Ask about with your friends on Facebook, someone may have some ideas.

    Good luck---keep us posted.

Well, our convention is a three-day event and last year we had nearly 2000 people attend, so we need a venue of, at least, 20,000 sq. ft. to house all the vendors, artists, guests, and panel events.

The suburb we're in has a community center but it's way too small. And there are only a handful of hotel/event centers in the OKC metro area with that much floor space. Some are too expensive, and others are in areas that make them less than desirable (pay-to-park, limited parking, etc.).

Plus, we need someplace that will give us a reasonable rate, because we're wanting to start a comic/sci-fi con this year as well.

Wow, a 3 day event and 20K sq ft does put a crimp on things. That's 1/2 acre under roof.

The new place we're looking at is 30K sq. ft. and a single floor, as opposed to our old venue which was over 20K sq. ft. but two floors.

We're hoping we found a hidden jewel and can get a good deal on it.

And it's just north of the airport in an area that has numerous hotels, fast food joints, and restaurants.

Losing the old site may have been a blessing in disguise.

I assume you're in a better mood now?

Well, I'm in kind of a holding pattern right now. We have to contact the other venue and see how good - or bad - of a contract we can negotiate.

But if we can get terms we can live with, it could propel us onto the level of the other two main conventions in the state.

I still miss the old Minefield. Regular posts and good people. This one is fine for my laptop at home, but on the office computer it reminds me of bulletin bords in the 90's. We had good times back hen didn't we?

                  Sorry.

Things used to be better here at Jouster too. Many people left. Some died. Some didn't like the political conversation hence it was separated and most of the conversation takes place in that forum now. Fewer people have interest in shooting partly due to not having a place to shoot. Military and collectible guns have dried up and gone ballistic in price. Older members have very few gun questions and a lot of us are old enough to consider downsizing our herd instead of adding to it.

Some of the "good people" from Minefield have transferred here. Others still may follow. Obviously your group is much smaller now.

I'm sorry to say that's my group right there.
Phase 1 netted me a new roof and a clean daily driver. Phases 2 & 3 are under consideration.

                    I'll be hanging on to a 12 ga., a 788 in .308 and a G36 that's imprinted itself onto my hip.

I still think there needs to be some threads added upstairs that could attract more of the Minefielders from MeWe.

                      Perhaps:
                      gunsmithing and repair
                      handguns
                      rifles
                      range and target

                      Just a thought.

I am entering the downsizing phase. Although in some cases it will be sell something to buy something else. Definitely need to start thinning out the herd. Good part is gun prices on a whole are crazy high. Not getting in any hurry about it.
