Flashback: Stephen Hawking warned AI could mean the 'end of the human race' in years leading up to his death

Long before Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak signed a letter warning that artificial intelligence poses "profound risks" to humanity, British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking had been sounding the alarm on the rapidly evolving technology.

"The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," Hawking told the BBC in an interview in 2014.

Pretty sure it's not Mr. Hawking's problem anymore.

I remember a movie back in the late '70s if memory serves. I can't remember the title, but the plot was that the U.S. built a massive super-computer that was meant to protect it from the USSR. Meanwhile, the USSR built a similar super-computer to do the same.

The computers became semi-sentient and realized there was another like them. The U.S. and Russia tried to keep the two machines from linking up (primitive internet) but were eventually unsuccessful and the two computers joined and took over all the electronics and industries in the world.
