I didn't want to hijack the thread started by Vernon Morris so I started this one. OK, here is my problem. I have a Winchester 1897 Trench Gun, SN - E947***. I have Bruce Canfields' book "United States Combat Shotguns" and have read the section about the '97 a couple times and referenced the tables in the back of the book. Everything concerning correctness seems to fall into place except one important thing. The barrel is not tapered, marked "cyl", has the Winchester stamp and correct roll stamps, measures 21 1/4 inches from the closed breech face to the very end, a flat brass bead of sorts, and is marked "40" indicating the year it was made. However, it does not have the Flaming Bomb on the top near the receiver.
The stock is marked WB with crossed cannons below on the left side and is the correct one for the WW II 97. It has the correct U.S. & Flaming Bomb on the left side of the receiver; correct six hole hand guard and bayonet assembly and I can not find any evidence of it being shimmed; I can also see one of the notches on the underside of the barrel; it is has a 18 groove hand guard, and parkerized. With all of these qualifications seemingly being correct, does the missing Flaming Bomb on the top of the barrel definitely mean that the barrel is not correct? Many thanks for any input that anyone would care to share.
