Of course they seem like nice people! Taxpayer-granted wealth, large estates, very few official duties, what's not to like? Life is is good for them.

Our dems dream of an all-powerful monarch, and a sheriff of Nottingham. It won't happen as long as we are armed. Dems hate armed citizens. Regards, Clark

Royal Families tend to inbreed a lot.

Technically Canada is a monarchy with Elizabeth II being Queen of Canada as well as Queen of England and other realms. She is represented in Canada by the Governor General who is appointed by the Queen on the recommendation of the Government of Canada. There are a couple of important points to note. Firstly, the system works well (and remember the old engineering rule: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"). Secondly, the Queen (or the Governor General) is above politics. She rules but she does not govern. That gives her a lot of credibility as she is not drowning in the muck of politics. Thirdly, she does have a formal constitutional role involving the appointment of the Government and the dissolution of Parliament and the calling of an election. This is very very important but occurs only every few years. That gives her a lot of time to carry out ceremonial duties and this relieves the Prime Minister of a lot of time wasting activities. A I say, it all works (for us)

If the USA wanted to have a monarchy the problem would be in determining a system that works for you. A constitutional monarchy like that of the UK or the Scandanavian countries works but is backed by hundreds of years of tradition and evolution. The real fear would be that a US monarchy without the controls would quickly become a hereditary dictatorship. On balance, forget it. Your system works. You can dump your King-President every four years if you don't like him or her.

It wasn't dems that the OP was talking to who expressed interest in the idea of a monarchy.
