absolutely. even if he cant drop one in on target right now, it wont be long before he can.
False alarm - missile attack Hawaii

What enemies have we underestimated? Saddam? The USSR? Japan? There is a difference in underestimating and knowing but ignoring their capabilities. The U-2 flights proved the USSR nuclear threat was largely a myth. Japan’s threat was known but politicized and ignored by FDR. Saddam’s nuclear, chemical, and conventional war fighting capabilities were all way overestimated. Clinton was warned that OBL was a threat but ignored him.
The Hawaii missile warning happened now not in he future. Future progress is questionable and uncertain and made possible by he actions and inactions of Bubba Clinton, the Bushes, and the anointed one. Had they stood up and confronted the NoK’s, it would not be this big of a problem.Comment

I'm not buying the BS story of a 'shift change drill'. If a shift is coming on, and the SHTF, it's the responsibility of that shift, not the old one. From what I've seen over the years, the "Emergency Response Center" sucks hind tit. It's not used that often, so it gets the dregs of the available office space. You can't have two shifts there at the same time.
I doubt there's a "button" to push. More like a computer interface. Which means HEMAs system sucks. They had an automated system to send out an alert, but they didn't have an automated system to send out a cancellation. Why? Because no one would be dumb enough to send out an actual alert by mistake. SEE: Murphy's Law.
As my Dad used to tell me, ' the military tries to develop systems or equipment that can survive some numbnut with a feather'.
Had to laugh at a NYTs article today, about how this type of incident could launch a war by accident. I was unaware that HEMA had access to US nuclear launch codes. But they have to be right. They're the NYTs. The same folks who told us Hillary! would be the next president. And their premier economic expert said that Wall Street would tank after Trump was elected."No man's life, liberty, or property is safe, while Congress is in session." Mark TwainComment

We underestimated the Japs. Never did we suspect that with Kido Butai (First Air Fleet) they had developed for the time the most sophisticated weapons system in the world (December '41). We and everyone else underestimated the resilience of the Soviet Union in the face of the Nazi onslaught.
Is it possible we underestimated the Vietnamese desire to rid themselves of Western masters?Comment

while it is absolutely true we didnt take the n vietnamese seriously, but on the other side of the coin we did possess the ability to win , but our politicians played the PC game instead of winning a war they got us involved in.We underestimated the Japs. What does Vietnam look like in say 1978 after this glorious victory if our politicians don't "leave the gloves on" or whatever term people want to substitute? And how many more Americans and uncounted Vietnamese are killed and maimed? The tonnage of ordnance expended in Vietnam was not small as it is. Nobody has been able to explain what this victory would look like or what it would take to get there, only that the politicians get the blame for it not being realized. I point out that the war was not particularly popular in the USA, even when you exclude the opinions of the hippies and their girlfriends, whose self-interests were obvious.Comment

Well then why say the war could be won if only... when you have no clue what victory would look like?
My take: our fighting men did an incredible job under impossible circumstances. But geography was never going to be defeated. Command of the seas allowed the UN to secure the South Korean peninsula and have a single front facing north. With Vietnam the western border was impossible to secure, and Beijing would support the north as long as was necessary. Was the sacrifice of our people worth it? I hope so, in the long view of history.Comment

now thats a discussion, that crap you asked was something else entirely that not even lbj or macnamara could have guessed(imo im pretty certain they never planned that far ahead).Well then why say the war could be won if only... when you have no clue what victory would look like?

Here is how it works. The state other then sounding an alarm has nothing to do with the process. NORAD detects that launch, a conference call is formed and a decision of what to do is made. I'm sure Pacific Command has an alerting terminal that is tied into the NORAD system so they can be alerted to the activity. To Error Is Human To Forgive Is Not SAC PolicyComment
