Who the Hell would want to live on Mars anyway ? ...

It's a dump, with nothing there but sand and rocks as
far as the eye can see yet NASA keeps wasting it's hard
earned dollars having Rover dig for microbes. Why ? If
we find one are we going to ask it what happened up
there and where did everybody go ? Hardly, so why does
NASA keep on with this ? Does anyone seriously believe
that Mars once had a thriving civilization that collapsed
and they all came here ? Our first ancestors were covered
in fur and hit each other with clubs - hardly the kind you
would expect to have built the space ships that brought
them here. NASA should just send someone there for a
look see. Who knows, maybe they'll find a shopping Mall
but I wouldn't bet on it. I remember seeing that Van Kilmer
went there and gave it the finger while uttering "Ferk this planet"
    Precisely my feeling.

Re: Op. No interest in mars exploration, etc., etc., etc. NASA was and remains useful for one thing and one thing alone ... allowing the US to have the necessary capacity to launch ICBM, do satellite surveillance, etc. in operations directed against enemies of this nation. Otherwise, the foolishness of exploring space merely for the joy of finding stuff is only a waste of money that would be far far better spent on projects that actually benefited the lives of everyday Americans. Of course the various contractors and such folks would object ... same as dod contractors object when a unneeded defense project gets canned. But, especially as relates to NASA, it is about as useful and meaningful to the future of the nation as is which girl will win the Ms. Amerika/USA pageant. It just doesn't matter at all. JMHO. If there are reasons for interplanetary travel in the future, then Mars is a good practice range.

But why would there be reasons for interplanetary travel? Mars is the BEST of the planets, and there's basically nothing there. So we practice for going to Mars by going to Mars?

To seek knowledge, one of the driving forces of mankind. To try to understand where we came from, how the world happened, etc. These have been some of the most important questions for mankind, resulting in the sciences we have now, religion and a whole slew of other accomplishments.

But why would we have to travel for that -- we can get all we need with robotic missions.

Gotta disagree. If the manned program turned into an over-expensive boondoggle, the unmanned program has been a phenomenal success.

Given knowledge handed down from a Bronze Age tribe. Wisdom perhaps, but not facts.

The money saved by using robots instead of humans would be astronomical (pun intended). If you send humans you need all sorts of redundancy and extra weight that automation does not require. In other words, NASA could justify much greater spending! Since global warming is now being looked at with a more skeptical eye by the public, NASA must make up other boondoggles to look for funding.

That's a pretty ignorant thing to say.

NASA space probes have already discovered a few planets and moons which have water and atmosphere inside so-called Goldilocks zones. Impractical for humans to get there today but perhaps someday.
Why would we want to go there? The rock we're on isn't going to last forever. Mining alone might be worth the effort for now.

                              Hi Dogtag,

I am not too sure of you are correct. Although I have posted this before I will give it a quick re-run. The lake where we have our cabin (Pavilion Lake) is in south central British Columbia. It has some unusual freshwater coral formations. See the link. One of the reasons that these are unusual is that they are only found in a very few places in the world and these places are very far apart. There is no logical reason why they occur where they do, it is too far apart for birds or animals to transport them, the places are separated by oceans, etc.

One theory that NASA is looking into is that they may of come from a meteor and this meteor broke up when it hit the earth's atmosphere and scattered far and wide (no one has a better theory).

It is wondered if this meteor contained a basic life form which started life here on the earth? It is further wondered if what we think are rocks are Mars are actually this old fresh water coral.

I don't know, but I know the fish taste great. You can make up your own mind, if it is not already made up.
