People who say Social Security pays people far more than they contribute, fail to understand the time value of money. That dollar you paid into Social Security when you were in your late teens if invested in a fair-to-middlin' mutual fund would be worth over $100 when you reach retirement age.

As I once heard NJ's Senator Bill Bradley-D-tell a constituent:
"Social Security is an income transfer program and nothing else." Insurance ?-where's your policy? The government determines what you will get, when you get it-if you get it. Survivor benefits-limited to narrow government determined categories. If you don't live to collect it, your money goes back into the pool.
My experience with government provided/run healthcare is limited to the military. 10% of the people will get 90% of the benefits. The people with bad habits and unhealthy lifestyles benefit the most.Last edited by blackhawknj; 06-09-2018, 12:10.Comment

Legally, Social Security is old age insurance. It is paid for through the FICA tax -- that stands for Federal Insurance Contribution Act.
Of course, since it's run by the government, it was never managed along sound fiscal lines -- it became a slush fund for politicians seeking to increase their power by buying votes.
One of the reasons health insurance is so expensive these days is the government requirement to cover pre-existing conditions. That's like a law requiring you to raise in a poker game when you know your opponent has a royal flush. As you say, Obamacare is a system to penalize the healthy for the benefit of those people with bad habits and unhealthy lifestylesComment

Funny you say that Leftyo.... I'm a guy who's never collected a social benefit... never collected a pension from a social type job, IE law enforcement, fire department, military . I'm self employed and in fact ... employ others . I rely on no one.... all my bills are paid... house is paid for... medical bills all caught up...... and yet for the fact of those with a fear of an opposing viewpoint.... I'm a socialistComment
