But Everyone here except invalids have +/- 30 years to get their shait "smooth".
I was almost 30yo with a wife and kid, before I got a job that paid me enough for me to put something away for my future; 401k with matching contribution! Free money for the taking.
Did I want a new car or money for my family? I drove a '65 Chevy Suburban from 1977 to 1986 and put that money away. Company founder died and his son drove the company into the ground and sold out when I was 56. Some employees hadn't saved a thing.
If I could get back what the Feds took out of my paycheck including what my employer paid in for my SS and Medicare at the rate the DOW or any stock market index paid over that period, I'd be pretty happy with Gov't "assistance".

……
Medicare is not paid for out of Social Security "contributions." It is a separate tax of around 1% of which you get no benefit unless you live past 65. When I was an LEO back in the old days we were exempt Social Security and had a separate retirement account to which we "contributed" about 8%. We were not exempt the Medicare tax which came out of our checks.Last edited by Art; 07-10-2018, 07:23.Comment

Thirty years ago I heard NJ's then Senator Bill Bradley-D tell a constituent at a public meeting:
"Social Security is an income transfer program, nothing more."Comment

Bill, please don't try to judge me too harshly? I took certain comments very personally since the last time I had a rug yanked from beneath me I was 50 and learning how to walk all over again. My life savings was squandered by someone I trusted while I was most vulnerable. I was forced to supplement my pension with Social Security and I don't like it when someone tries to throw the wet "Welfare Whore" blanket over me. All my life I was told SS is insurance in case you ever need it so keep paying in. You never know when/if that day may come. It came.
I regrouped the best I could but it isn't easy when there is no longer any viable employment to be had, so no additional funds to sock away while tightening the belt. I have a few plans salvaged but can't touch them yet. I do feel fortunate that I'm in much better shape than others I know. I still dislike it when people look down their noses at those less fortunate. They don't all deserve it.
If I "Fed a Troll" then that's on me and I'll stop now that I'm aware. As far a being a better man....that's your opinion unfortunately. Thankfully I still have the respect of friends and neighbors so I can sleep well at night.2016 Chicago Cubs. MLB Champions!

No, you were told "$XXX has been deducted from your paycheck (and an equal amount before your pay stub was made up) and there's nothing you can do about it. We got your money!"
If you had been allowed to KEEP that 15.3% that was forcibly taken from you, you'd be a lot better off than you are.Comment

JB, I won’t judge you at all. I don’t know your situation and can’t comment on it. I do know that wealth is relative. I think we all have had our moments when we thought the whole world was against us and money would be the great equalizer. It has been my experience that it is not. I am rich beyond my wildest dreams at this point in my life. I have everything I could ever want in abundance. I am able to assist others who are not so fortunate and do so without missing a penny. I can also state that with all my present blessings, the times that I have been the happiest were times that I was the poorest. I try my best not to look down my nose at anyone less fortunate than me and by the same token, I refuse to look down my nose at someone more fortunate, either. I felt you were guilty of that and if I am wrong, I humbly apologize.

You have no way of knowing that! Stupid stupid stupid and insulting thing to say. Maybe the villain in his life clears that out too and he has nothing!
A cursory look at the low US household savings rate suggests that making SS participation optional would be great for truck, boat and vacation sales but lousy for current and future retirees. Even 401K participation sees people leaving employee matching funds, free money, on the table.
Vern and Boggs posts have a recurring theme of smugness to them, like their life decisions are a little better and smarter than everyone else. I may disagree with people on a lot of issues and catch flak here for it, but you don't see me parading my personal choices around as though I'm better than other people. It bugs me when people do that.Comment

Bill D, no need for an apology on your part. Shall we chalk it up to misinterpreting a few words and let it go since it seems we've cleared things up?
Togor, I did make a stupid mistake. I trusted somebody I always believed to be trustworthy. Calloused and condescending haven't always been among my greatest attributes.

Nope, Vern and I DID something to contribute to the cause, by your own admission all you did was to "think" about maybe having the government do something. You have no way of knowing that! Stupid stupid stupid and insulting thing to say. Maybe the villain in his life clears that out too and he has nothing!

I'm not attacking you -- you took personally some general comments I made.Bill D, no need for an apology on your part. Shall we chalk it up to misinterpreting a few words and let it go since it seems we've cleared things up?
