If she still floats, why scrap her ? ...

Seems like a waste to me. If planes can take off and land
without mishap, if the missiles still leave the tubes , and if
there's still food in the galley then she's still good to go.
Hell, it could still cream most of the World's navies.

My Truck is getting on in years, like me, but we both continue to function.
I'm certainly not going to "dismantle" her just because she's old and hopefully
    the same goes for me.

She's in bad shape. What that don't say is that she has already been dismantled. Planes cannot take off or land. No food in the galley. I was just on her last week looking for cannab equipment for Nimitz class. If you in Newport News let me know I can arrange a visit if we can get you a badge thru security. Still a beautiful ship.

Went on her once when I worked for the yard. That's a unique ship. Rust never sleeps. Odd to think that in a way a carrier is rusting away as they build it. It's a never ending battle. That's basically what did her in, and the cost of refueling the reactors.

Naval Jelly - you'll need a lot of it plus a big brush.

Seen her many times .... we were tied up beside her once in Norfolk . Kind of a historic sight ......

She being the first nuclear powered carrier and we being the last conventional powered carrier ...... U.S.S. John F. Kennedy CVA 67 ...... she's gone too .

50 plus Years is a long time to hang around in salt water. Very historic ship, which lived up to her name.

Jeez, isn't every launch seconds away from disaster? It's fast moving. VT-23 sent students out to the old carrier in the Gulf of Mexico. I kind of wanted to work out there but never got the chance.
If I should die before I wake...great,a little more sleep.

"Ay, tear her tattered ensign down..."
1 new ship=how many billions in appropriations, contracts, jobs, etc. ?

I suppose that it is totally politically incorrect but it seems to me that least expensive way to handle her is to take out the reactors, tow her to a very deep part of the Pacific and then sink her. Alternatively it can be sunk in shallower waters and become an artificial reef and a diver's Mecca.

Taking into account what it costs to prep a ship for artificial reef these days, it may be more prudent to let the scrappers bid on it and be done with it.
