Freedom of Speech in Canadian Universities

Our newly elected Conservative Government in the Province of Ontario has just issued an order to all publicly funded colleges and universities that they must develop a policy on free speech for staff, students and guests by Jan 1. The Province has set some minimum expectations for the policy and its enforcement and is using the University of Chicago Statement on Principles of Free Expression as a starting point. Further, they must issue an annual report on the initiative.

This is clearly a response to the lefties in the universities who have stopped anyone who is not a politically correct socialist from speaking, either in the classroom or at public meetings. It also follows from an incident a few months ago where a teaching assistant got reamed out and threatened by her professor and a member of the human resources section for showing a TV interview with a professor who strongly opposes the forced use of phony pronouns such as zu and zee, etc. Unfortunately for her professor, the teaching assistant recorded the interview and turned it over to the newsmedia. The crap hit the fan and the university was forced to publicly apologize.

All in all, a great move and I would love to be a fly on the wall in the offices of some of the universities when this is discussed. The language would certainly not be politically correct.

I wonder what passes for conservative speech up there. Down here a lot of it is just reactionary & poorly-aimed ethno-nationalism. Principled conservatism is missing from many places in the USA.

Maybe Milos whats-his-name will pay you guys a visit. CH's favorite homosexual, IIRC.

Not quite; my favorite was the one strung out on the barbed-wire fence in Wyoming.

If "diversity" means anything, it means diversity in thought. I believe we have reached the point where Affirmative Action programs must be developed to ensure a wide diversity of opinion on college campuses.

The meaning has now been twisted to mean unanimity of thought! Radical left-wing thought, that is. Ask Dr. Shockley, the Nobel Prize winner, how his scientific studies of racial differences were greeted by the academic world.

I'm aware of how Shockley was treated -- but my point is, if we are willing to sue universities to make them have diversity in things that really don't matter, why are we not enforcing diversity in things that DO matter?

Many years ago I had some correspondence with Dr. Shockley about differences in intelligence between the races. At this time he sent me a good deal of his original material on this subject and it made eminent sense. This was a long time before publication of The Bell Curve and the left wing academics still haven't recovered from this.

An openly gay journalist debunked that whole charade. The two murderers were trying to cover up a drug deal gone bad thinking they would get protection in prison.
