Is there a right to self defense in Canada? I know in U.K. the law basically requires one to thank their assailant.

Barretcreek; As I understand things, in Canada, you can defend yourself but the level of force applied has to be proportional to the situation and the risk. If someone grabs your protest sign, you really can't take another sign and belt him unconscious with the stick even the jerk deserves it. In practice however, no matter what the risk, you really have to be in deadly danger before you use a firearm. The police will almost automatically charge you with something (at least a charge of improper storage of a firearm) if you do use a gun. They are firm believers in the concept of calling the police rather than taking on someone yourself.

Thank you. My take is my 102 year old mother has to react proportionately to a 225 lb 6'2" 17 year old thug. If she had a gun she wouldn't have the reactions to use it. Here in Colorado we have two statutes. A) Make my day. No explanation needed. B) Make my neighbor's day. Passed after a (retired or not LE) saw a guy climbing in his neighbor's window. Last time the PoS did that.
Calling the cops after you are dead just doesn't cut it. Maybe in Canada the police show up each time every time but here it depends on the Zip code. And sometimes who can blame them the way the neighbors react. Better to call the coroner.

And maybe Tough Guy will meet a Special Friend.

He will be arrested as she intends to press charges. It's an ongoing investigation and the police are still gathering details. Others are asked to come forward as well. He's got a number of damage to property and assault charges coming should others decide to pursue the matter.

In the United States it is similar and we have an added bonus. About twenty five years ago our Supreme Court handed down a ruling that the police are under no obligation to protect the average individual only government or business entities. Here is also the kicker, a person being held in protective custody is entitled to police protection. No where is the average person entitled to protection, only the general welfare of the nation. This is correct as it goes back to the nation's earlies days of an individual protecting themselves and theirs. Problem is that many prosecutors don't see it that way.
