The fuel tax represents if you will the last straw to people in French Departments where the standard of living is low. Why is it low? Simplest view is that capital has other options and it takes them. It should be noted that Macron is no friend of the French left who thinks that subsidies are the answer. In any market-oriented, capitalist system there are going to be regions with comparatively less to offer, where the most valuable export is the one for which they are scarcely compensated--their most talented sons and daughters. Macron finally did pull his head out of his arse and set up meetings with the Yellow Vest leaders. Something they should have done sooner. It may be too late because if tax concessions aren't offered it will escalate again. The French are tired of patronizing BS right now.

Just to point out Dryheat that the "Again" in #MAGA is calibrated specifically to appeal to those in this country who feel like the competitive balance has gone against them.

It's complicated. I live on 27K a year...comfortably. Yeah, I'm lucky to be an early Boomer. But if you couldn't make it in the greatest country on Earth on the best planet in the universe from 1973-2006, well then you weren't even trying. It's maybe a little tougher now and there's more competing. But like McCains daughter mentioned; I didn't know that America had slipped any. Make America great how? I'd ban tattoos, rap music, fake Mustangs and Challengers. Football players would be required have have neatly trimmed hair. I'd appoint a PBS czar. There's always a bunch of whiny cry babies protesting about how unfair it is to be them. Tough. I'm not sure what is the matter with France other than they are a little to "multi-national".

I wish that were true -- but it isn't. If it were, this country would be in the throes of a revolution right now.
