The Boy who cried Salmonella ...

I tend to get suspicious when so many different foods are
recalled because someone somewhere got sick causing vast
quantities of foods to be recalled and then destroyed. This
causes monetary losses on a vast scale - and it's all apparently
caused by "Salmonella" Chickens, eggs, romaine lettuce and
beef are the culprits - or so we're led to believe. Where the hell
did this killer come from ? It was never a problem years ago,
    so why now ?

Romaine recall came from Central California?

In the first place, it's not a killer: "Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized."
      CDC website.

In the case of fruits & vegs picked by hand, the ultimate source is almost always found to be migrant farmworkers.

Such mindless destruction is an unspeakable crime against the environment & poor people all over the world, when the bacteria are quickly killed merely by COOKING! Only 14 sec. at 160 deg. That wouldn't be practical for vegs grown for salad making, but there's no excuse for discarding one oz of even the worst contaminated meat.

The problem is lawyers -- it's much cheaper for producers to simply recall and destroy the crop than to fight the lawsuits.

I've had the S****fifty time or more. I always wonder what caused it. It never kills me. Fast food is risky and I stay away from it most of the time(I trust the Asian lady that runs the local JITB). Even five star restuarants are risky, since it's kind of minimum wage. I've been in the kitchens and it's eye opening. I love Chopotle and it's kind of like the stock market for me. When they have scare I "buy low".

Sal Monella weren't no outfielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers. I had a bad case of it once. Drink a glass of water and in minutes you're crappin cold liquid. Not fun. What is worse it the latest strain of E coli which produces toxins wrecking the intestines, the kidneys, and 'drowns' the heart in fluid. That strain has only been in the USA for about 15-20 years. If that's what you have, don't treat it lightly. Anything to stop it like Pepto-Bismol can kill you by not letting it pass through. The thing breeds like rabbits.

Turd Worlders are hired for most of this "out of sight" work, & they bring their endemic diseases with them. People who from birth are exposed to all these bacteria become immune to their effects--otherwise they'd be dead; but they can still pass them on.

A friends wife got something horrible from going to the dentist of all things. I can't recall the story exactly, but they gave her something that prevented her body from doing it's job and she came close to being a "bag lady". Ah,that's colostomy bag. That didn't happen and she's 100% now, but it rocked them pretty good.

                  yep,

one dead kid from a bad hamburger,,

                  and you are toast,

not to mention the horrors of killing a kid

                  - - - Updated - - -

having spent most of my life in the grocery business, I have been involved in a xxxxton of recalls,

                  they are all a PITA,,
get a notice, go pull and destroy (or hold for return) then fill out and file paperwork,

wait a day, week, month for a resupply and meanwhile have to explain what the recall is and most importantly is not to your customers constantly, most who don;t realize I did not make it, the company I worked for just sold it,

the only one that I was affected by was the big peanut butter issue maybe 10 yrs ago,

I bought a loaf of bread, and a jar of peter pan, made a couple sandwiches at work for lunch, and an hour or so later got the xxxxs,,

felt fine after a couple bowel movements, and felt fine the next day,
the day after that the recall came down, and the jar I had was part of the recall lot

Much of the problem of bacterial contamination of ground beef could be solved if the public would accept the concept of irradiated meat. The public has the perception that using gamma radiation or ion beam irradiation causes the meat to become "radioactive", which is not true. In some instances, the irradiated food has a single digit percentage reduction in certain vitamins, but the negative aspect of the slight decrease in nutritional value is far exceeded by the decreased risk of bacterial contamination. Ground meats are particularly susceptible to contamination because the grinding process spreads any contamination through lots of material and the grinding process introduces air pockets which can increase bacterial growth.

When I was in Vietnam, I learned real quick not to eat Vietnamese food of any kind! 8-/
Even drinking '33' beer concerned me because there was a 1/2 inch of sediment in the bottom of the bottle.

One of the staples of all TV travel shows to Turd World countries is a visit to the local open air market where everything is exposed to swarms of flies & unwashed hands. Yet only tourists careless enough to eat uncooked food (or cooked food afterwards handled by contaminated hands) get sick--an example of the resistance of natives to such diseases...which they bring with them into this country.

Only idiots drink tap water in foreign countries. I've traveled to Mexico probably 2 doz. times, & since food in even the best eateries is so cheap, I always used to gorge myself several times a day, sometimes going from one food stall to the next--never sick once, though I stayed away from fresh produce.
