It's horrible. My wife was there a few weeks ago with a school trip. She says it's an amazing building.

Togor, it, like many cathedrals, are certainly some of the most amazing structures we've made as human beings.

An article on Yahoo news states:

"Fire officials told Agence France-Presse that the fire was potentially linked to the renovation of the building. Scaffolding could be seen ablaze on the roof of the famous façade."

So that may account for how it happened in broad daylight.

It was under renovation. It's always an idiot with a torch.

If memory serves me right, within the last 3 years Muslims tried to use propane tanks to set the church on fire. Odd, the week of Easter and the soul of Paris is set on fire.

I've been to Westminster, St Martin-in-the-Fields, St Pauls, a Cathedral in Winchester UK, as well as one in Bath,
                    and Cantebury as well,

all are magnificent structures, even more so when you look at when they were built time wise

We spent time late at night around Notre Dame. It was absolutely spellbinding.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger. I'm just repeating the published article but I went back and looked and yes, there appears to be a lot of metal (since it isn't on fire) scaffolding. What was burning on the scaffolding was no doubt the wooden boards used to walk on and the toe boards--a part of the scaffolding. I assume the scaffolding would have gone before the roof if it was all wood?

I've never been able to figure out how people in those days built such wonderful things.

Well I guess the building didn't have a sprinkler system. It will be interesting to determine if their was a fire watch if they were using torches. I do know that old timbers once they get going are hard to put out.

Yes, fire watch must not translate in French.
