Starting to make me wish I'd been a farmer and voted Trump ...

After all... being a very small self employed business owner I must confess my income has dropped heavily these past two years . Had to drop clients as finding help that will come to work every day is problematic . On top of which operating costs {insurance, materials , etc. etc } have risen 15 % ..... so where is my share of the 27 Billion ?

To their credit, most farmers would rather have a normal export market. But we've way overbuilt our ag production in cereals, livestock and dairy. There is going to be a shake out, no matter what.

I doubt any of us could feed ourselves in the manner to which we've become accustomed with out the American farmer. I don't mind them getting some help, I hope they all prosper. I'm sure I could produce enough food to survive on my little patch of ground in Missouri, but at seventy-one, I don't want to try it.

Where is your share of the 27 Billion? Do you farm? If so, you may qualify. If you do not farm, you do not qualify. For my part, I consider that the 27 billion is the least that is owed to farmers whose income has been arbitrarily damaged by these tariffs. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

Well that's part of it for sure, but people want a steady supply of affordable food, and that means getting government involved to take the edges of the gyrations of the free market.

The man I ran against when I ran for Congress, Marion Berry, was on the House Agriculture Committee. He pushed through an "emergency" bill, and personally profited from it to the tune of $80,000. Now most of his land was in the Conservation Reserve Program -- lying fallow and unplanted. What kind of an "emergency" would affect CRP land?

The good part is that he broke up his holdings and concealed them under a tortured arrangement, so he couldn't be attacked like that again, He "gave" land away to confederates. And when he left Congress, his old friends refused to give the land back.

Thank goodness politicians don't declare bogus emergencies anymore!! The bean farmers need to switch to a different crop if those beans won't be going to feed Chinese hogs anymore. Not a bad thing if the marginal and flood prone fields come out of production. Automation has hollowed out the countryside anyways. 1 or 2 guys can farm 2000 acres (over 3 square miles) of cereals.

Not a bad thing if the marginal and flood prone fields come out of production. Automation has hollowed out the countryside anyways. 1 or 2 guys can farm 2000 acres (over 3 square miles) of cereals.

Its not as easy as just deciding to switch crops. Beans have been fairly stable on price and return on investment has been attractive if you can beat the weather, insects, weeds and market versatility, oh! and government help.

Farms should be preserved at any cost. As our population grows like there's no tomorrow our farms are going to the way side, the U.S. becoming more and more dependent upon foreign countries for food. The importance of farmers should only be behind border security perhaps and these billions of dollars are only a drop in the hat compared to what the U.S. has been losing to China, Japan, S. America and many other countries due to the trade imbalance. It won't be forever and will eventually balance out.
