You mean no law changes up to the moment that all autoloaders are regulated like NFA weapons, right? Or banned outright like bump stocks? Imagine: fingerprints on file, like a common criminal or MG owner, required for all centerfire autoloading firearm (pistol, rifle, shotgun) purchases, and tied into a LE searchable database. The folks worried about government tyranny would have a cow! And in some ways, that would be the point, because some of them, as we know, have a bit of an anti-social streak. And if you're a straw buyer, conducting business just got harder if at the stroke of a few keys, LE can know anyone in the country who has purchased more than X handguns in Y weeks. Like running a DL through the system in a routine traffic stop. People who say "new laws won't effect anything" lack imagination as to how intrusive a law is possible now at an affordable cost with Big Data being so cheap. If the number of new guns sold is dropped by 80% due to all of the hassles (without outright bans on any of it), then eventually the inventory of used guns will go down too. Gun banners take the long view. Fewer gun deaths next year than this year. Fewer still the year after, and so on. Progress. Nothing banned, but some restrictions and a feeling that the government is keeping an eye on who has what, taking some of the fun out of gun ownership for some people.
And anyways, President Trump tells us now that there is tremendous interest in getting a terrific red flag and background check law passed. So there is that.
