both grandparents had a container of bacon fat on the stove,
used it for most everything,
my fraternal grandmother fried most stuff in lard, and damn did it taste good,
french fries fried and or fried chicken done in lard is delicious,,Comment

If your American palate is not to be offended, you must seek out the Brit food that you desire. Not every restaurant or pub serves food that we would regard as appetizing. The English breakfast is uniformly excellent, unless you are a vegan or veggie. The Grasshopper on the Green pub serves a world-class burger, as long as you don't mind sharing your pint with the owner's German Shepard. The best way to find good food in the UK is to go with someone who knows where to go. If you wish to dine without fear of hunger, Germany is the place to visit. If a German establishment has a sign and a stove, there is excellent food there.Comment

For those that can't find suitable food in foreign countries there's always KFC, McDonalds, BK and many other American fast food industries that have become global. Though a lot of their food is "crappy" you at least know what to expect both in taste and cleanliness.
We all know that foods that are/were cooked in lard or bacon grease taste better. We also know what that does to your arteries. For those of us who are aging we don't need any extra help reaching our "end point".
Health wise it's often said: "if it taste good spit it out".
With all the foreign immigrants both legal and illegal and overpopulation I suppose authentic traditional cuisine in most countries is becoming hard to find.Comment

And when you find it, look out.
When I was an adviser to ARVN Infantry, we ate with the ARVN -- we were not allowed US rations. "Authentic" Viet Namese cooking can be pretty bad -- ever bit into a rotten bamboo shoot?Comment

German troops in North Africa were given Italian rations, including tins of an unidentifiable meat with the letters "A M" embossed on them. The joke was that this stood for Alter Mann (old man).Last edited by togor; 08-19-2019, 09:28.Comment

biggest issue we had in England was finding Gluten Free stuff,
in 2008 the GF food was hard to find in most places you go out to eat, unlike today,
wife is Celiac, wheat and other Gluten grains tear her up,
we were lucky there was a Sainsbury (grocery store) a couple blocks from the hotel, so we walked over and bought supplies (bagged salads, meats etc) and made a decent dinner in the hotel room a few nights,
pubs were limited to Jacket Potato,
(baked potato) or a not that great Salad,
we did find a chain called EAT, that had some GF options, including a great Flourless Orange cake,
we tried English beef at a restaurant in Trafalgar Square,, it was horrible, but the rest of the food was tasty,
one of the best sandwiches was at a museum in Trafalgar Square,,
wheat bread, with a slice of ham, thinly sliced English Cukes, English Mustard, and a cold beer,,
that was very tastyComment
